Esmeralda Herald (Hawthorne), 11/17/1883 (Saturday):

A Fatal Fall. On Wednesday evening, November 14th, Anthony Thurman fell down the pump shaft of the Standard mine in Bodie, and was found a terribly mutilated corpse. He was an old resident and known familiarly as “Tony.” He was buried under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. and Miners’ Union.

Anthony Thurman, a miner, Wednesday night, fell a distance of 200 feet down the Standard shaft at Bodie, and was killed. He was 26 years of age, a native of Sullivan county, N.Y., where he has relatives now living.

The funeral of Anthony Thurman, the young miner killed by falling down the Standard shaft, took place on Friday of last week, and the turnout was one of the largest of the kind ever witnessed in Bodie.

Esh, a brother pioneer of Bodie, but now a resident of Lake Canyon, on Wednesday last.

"1883 - Anthony Thuman, son of Barbara Thuman who resides at Callicoon, was instantly killed on the 15 inst. while working in a mine in California. Transportation of his remains was impossible. Burial services will be held in the R C Church in Jeff on Friday Nov 23."
