James, age 19, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 27 January 1862 at Greenville, North Carolina. At enlistment he was described as follows: born Pitt County, NC; farmer; and 5 feet and 6 inches tall. He was mustered on 3 April 1862 at Camp Morgan near Raleigh, North Carolina as Private in Company I, 44th North Carolina Infantry. On 27 October 1864, he was captured at Petersburg and sent to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland. James was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland and transferred to Aiken's Landing, Virginia for exchanged on 17 March 1865.
