Ernesteen Barton passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, at a local hospital. Visitation will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Tuesday (today) at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South. Funeral Service will be 10 am Wednesday, May 8, 2015 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith with burial to follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Ernesteen was born February 24, 1927 in Commerce, Texas. She was the only child of Ernest Wallace and Ellen (Kegans) Wallace. Ernesteen grew up in Lubbock, Texas, graduating from Lubbock High School and continuing her education at Texas Tech University. In 1946 Ernesteen married Eddie Barton following his return from service in the Air Corps in War World II. In the mid-1950s they moved from Fort Worth to Abilene and opened up Lavender’s Cafeteria, later known at Barton’s Cafeteria. Ernesteen worked there for many years, and later served as manager of the Abilene Civic Center. Eddie passed away in 1998. Ernesteen moved to Wesley Court in 2005, as one of the original founding residents. She was a very active and well loved resident. In 2007 Ernesteen married Dr. Bill Roberson, a local retired veterinarian and resident of Wesley Court. Bill passed away in 2011. For most of her life, Ernesteen was an avid golfer. She and Eddie were members of the Abilene Country Club. She also served several terms as president of the Women’s Golf Association. In her later years Ernesteen replaced her golfing with duplicate bridge, playing as often as she could. She was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. Ernesteen was a very devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and adored her great-grandchildren. Her love for her family has overflowed in to each of their lives and will be in their hearts forever. She also had a great love for her dogs, especially her surviving dog, Pecos. Survivors include her son, Pat Barton and wife, Jo Ann; daughter, Sue Ellen Savage and husband, Mark; grandchildren Cynthia Tesch and husband Bryan, Kimberly Bernard and husband, Michael, Jonathan Barton, Angela Caton and husband, Garrick, and Brian Barton and wife, Andra; great-grandchildren Chloe, Amelia Brandon, Ethan, Ryllie, Raley, Lyndon, Harper, and Nolan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Ernest Wallace Scholarship Fund at Texas Tech University or the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest Building Fund.
