Civil War Union Major General. Born 3 years after British General Charles Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown during the Revolutionary War (1781), he was the oldest officer on the active list during the Civil War. After serving in the War of 1812 he was promoted to Colonel and assigned as Inspector General of the army. He received the brevets of Brigadier General in 1841 and Major General in 1847. From 1847 until the beginning of the Civil War he was commander of the Department of the East. Promoted to Major General 1862 and headquartered at Fortress Monroe, Virginia, he was then assigned to command of the Department of Virginia. He had fifty years on active service when he died at the age of 85.
