Richard Allen Flint, 71, of Provo, Utah passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Thursday, September 9th from complications due to pneumonia. He had also been courageously battling lymphoma cancer since late May.
Dick was born on July 26, 1939 in Bloomington, Illinois to Allen Hatch Flint and Esstel Turpin Flint of Bellflower, Illinois. His childhood was blessed with close relationships with relatives, friends, and the small town community. His boyhood hero was none other than Gene Autry. Dick graduated from Bellflower Township High School and then went on to the University of Illinois in Champaign.
He then transferred to Brigham Young University where he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Business Management. Several years later he returned to BYU to complete his Masters of Accountancy degree.
After a move to Southern California to pursue his banking career he met and courted Phyllis Gravell of Alhambra, California. They were married in the Los Angeles California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 1970.
Together they had three boys and until 1996
resided in Arcadia, California. Dick's banking career included stops at Security Pacific Bank in Los Angeles, Union Bank in Los Angeles, and Western Bank in Westwood where he retired as the Senior Vice President at age 47. He started a custom homebuilding business named Flintshire Homes which excelled until the recession of the early 90's.
He also enjoyed owning rental property which at one time included three apartment complexes. In early 1996 the family relocated to Provo after necessity required that Dick return to the banking industry. He worked at Utah Community Credit Union as a Commercial Loan Supervisor until his retirement in spring 2008.
Dick enjoyed spending time with relatives and friends, genealogy research, caring for his boyhood home in Bellflower, Illinois, functions at BYU, lounging in his bathrobe, and time spent on Southern California's Riviera in Laguna Beach. He loved to travel having organized numerous summer trips for the family to 47 of the 50 US states. His last major trip was to Europe last fall with Phyllis.
Dick is survived by his wife Phyllis; his brother James; his children, Randall (Anita) of Huntington Beach, CA and Christopher (Annette) of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA; his daughter-in-law Inga Provo, UT; grandchildren Ilona, Alina, Richard, Ethan, Ruby, and Macey.
He was preceeded in death by his parents and his eldest son Jeffrey.
Services will be held at the Oak Hills LDS Stake Center located at 925 E. North Temple Drive in Provo, Utah on Monday, September 13th. A viewing will begin at 9:30 AM followed by the funeral at 11 AM.
Services will also be held at the Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home located at 302 East Lincoln Street in Saybrook, Illinois on Thursday, September 16th. A visitation will begin at 9:30 AM followed by a memorial service at 11 AM.
Internment will be at the Bellflower Township Cemetery following the services.
