Helen L. Murphy, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Eldorado, daughter of Chester P. Wasson and Julia Neely Wasson, died on Nov. 1, 2002, on her 80th birthday in Tampa. She was the widow of Thomas R. Murphy, who predeceased her in December 1992, and is survived by a son, Thomas R. Murphy Jr. and his wife, Mary (Culley), of Eldorado and a daughter Patricia Dempsey and her husband, the Rev. Dan R. Dempsey of Lutz, Fla., as well as two grandchildren, Daniel Philip Dempsey and Benjamin Allan Dempsey and two step-grandchildren, Lynndon Kyle Vinyard and Rachel Ann Vinyard. She was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Wasson.Mrs. Murphy was a graduate of Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky., and taught home economics and other courses in various school districts for several years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Eldorado before moving to Florida in 1980 where she attended Gulfport Presbyterian Church and churches pastored by the Rev. Dempsey. Until her last illness in 2000, she was active in the Senior Center in Gulfport and loved her dogs and working in the yard. She was under Hospice care since early September this year.The body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Eldorado on 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002. Friends may visit with the family an hour before the service at the church. The ashes will be interred at Bethesda Cemetery in Pope County in a private ceremony.
