Civil War Union Brigadier General. One of the first graduates of the United States Military Academy (class of 1805), he served as Chief Engineer of the United States Army for 26 years. During the Mexican War he served on the staff of Major General Winfield Scott, and was brevetted Brigadier General in 1847. During the Civil War he engaged in scientific and ordnance studies, and was promoted to permanent Brigadier General in 1863.
