Went to sea at age 17 and traded in the Far East including Singapore. When the Civil War erupted in the U.S., he returned home and enlisted in the 32nd Mass Infantry Volunteers, rising to rank of Lt Col. He engaged in raising sheep at Laramie, Wyoming in the 1870's and ultimately returned to New England, managing properties at and near Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire.
George married Frances Matson Burke (b Wash DC Oct 7, 1847) on Feb 22, 1865 and they had a son Francis Dana who was a lawyer in New York City, in 1908.
