Son of Caleb Cranston and Abigail Davis. He was a schoolteacher in Roxbury, NY. He married Mary Elizabeth Davis on December 20, 1835 in Roxbury. They had four children; Ann Mary, Thomas Caleb, Elizabeth O, and Mary Isabel. Following Mary's death in 1844, he married Ann Eliza Smalling, another schoolteacher, on May 4, 1845 in Roxbury. They had four children; Frances Ann, George Henry, Eliza Ann, and Emma Augusta. David enlisted to fight in the Civil War at the age of 50, serving in Co. I of the 4th MI Cavalry. An upstanding member of the Fairgrove community, serving as postmaster, notary public, justice of the peace, and minister.
