He married Mariah Holshouser on Christmas Eve 1868 and they are the parents of Minnie Miller Frick, Laura Miller, Luther Adolphus Miller and Carrie Levina Miller Holshouser. He had supported his family by farming.
John was admitted to the new Western NC asylum in 1883, the year it opened. His marker indicates that he was the 184th person admitted to the new facility. He remained there until his death 30 years later of chronic interstitial nephritis and cardiac failure.

Corporal Resided in Rowan County where he enlisted at age 19, July 4,1862, for the war. Mustered in as Private. Wounded in the arm at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Returned to duty in March-April, 1863. Promoted to Corporal in May-August, 1863 Reported present until November 7, 1863, when he was captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia. Confined at Point Lookout,Maryland, November 11, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on March 16, 1863. Received at City Point, Virginia, March 20 1864, for exchange. Returned to duty in May-August, 1864. Reported present through February 18, 1865. Wounded in the face and/or right hand at Fort Stedman, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia. Captured in hospital at Richmond on April 3, 1865. Confined at Newport News, Virginia, April 24, 1865. Released at Newport News on June 26, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
