He was a farmer. He was first generation born in America. His mother taught him German. He was a lay minister who on occasion would preach or lecture in German. Perhaps he never felt called to become a full time pastor for he continued to farm to support the family. Somewhere between censuses of 1900 and 1910 they moved to Whitehall. He died at 51 years old from pneumonia. He is buried with his wife and four young pre-deceased children and his son Wesley.
