US Congressman, Michigan Governor, US Senator. He studied law, moved to Michigan in 1833, was admitted to the bar, practiced law and was active in agricultural pursuits. For Livingston County, he was Justice of the Peace, Postmaster, the first judge of probate and a member of Michigan House of Representatives. In 1847, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. He then resumed agricultural pursuits and was elected as a Republican the 11th Michigan Governor, serving (1854-59). During his tenure, a personal liberty law was sanctioned, the Michigan Agricultural College was founded and legislation that regulated the lumber industry was authorized. After leaving office, he was elected to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 52.
