Hudsul was born in Asheville, NC (or possibly Big Ivy) to Henry David Payne and Cecilia Ann "Celia" Shuford. He enlisted in the military at the age of 18 and served for a year before he was honorably discharged. Not much is known about his life other than he moved around a lot and worked in various farm-related jobs, and he had a brief relationship and two marriages before he died of Tuberculosis at the young age of 43. His first romantic partner was Vina Ethridge, with whom he had a son, Eugene Patrick Hutchins Sr. His first wife was Isabella Mary Bryden, with whom he had a daughter, Betty Jean (Payne Macomber) Reinan. His second wife Idella June and he had two children, Leroy Payne and Dolores Payne. It is possible he spent some years working in Canada, as his brothers and father did occasionally. He is buried in Walla Walla.
