J. Marion Sims was a surgical pioneer, considered the father of American Gynecology. However, he is also considered a highly controversial figure, and medical ethicists condemn many of his practices. A 2023 book by J. C. Hallman describes the surgical experiments he performed on enslaved black women, discussed here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/09/books/review/say-anarcha-jc-hallman.html.

He was the son of Captain John "Jack" Sims (died 1867) and Mahala Mackey (1792-1832).

He was the grandson of Sherod S. Sims and Elizabeth Weaver.

There is a statue dedicated to Dr. Marion Sims on the lawn of the State Capital Building in Montgomery, AL, where he lived for many years. A statue dedicated to him in New York, where he founded a women's hospital, was removed in 2018.

Marion and Theresa had at least 9 children (in order): James M, Jr; Eliza Theresa; Mary Virginia; Merry Christmas; Granville Sharpe; Carrie Marion; Harry Marion; William Clay; and Florence Nightingale.
