Playwright. He wrote many successful Broadway plays, including "The Gold Diggers", "Getting Gertie's Garter", "Ladies' Night In a Turkish Bath", "Fair & Warmer", "Nobody's Widow", and "The Bat". At one time he had four hit plays running simultaneously. Today he is chiefly remembered on the campus of his alma mater, the University of Michigan, as benefactor of the Avery Hopwood and Jule Hopwood (his mother) Creative Writing Awards (established 1931), which encouraged such writers as Robert Haydn, Marge Piercy, Arthur Miller, Betty Smith, Lawrence Kasdan, John Ciardi, Mary Gaitskill, Nancy Willard and Frank O'Hara, to name a few, during their student years. The Hopwood Program, which celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2006, awards more than $150,000 each year in prizes to contest winners.
