Carroll was born and raised in Baltimore and was drafted 5 April 1968 into the Marines by the Selective Service Board #22 of Baltimore.
When Carroll arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Carroll died as a result of a gunshot wound to the body during a company engagement against hostile forces in the vicinity of Dong Tien (2) and 6 kilometers west northwest of Dien Ban, while the battalion participating in Operation Meade River.
Survived by his parents; Clyde Roland and Cedelia Vangelina S Derrill, and a sister; Betty all of Baltimore, Maryland.
