"Rev. Newell W. Bixby, received his education in Vermont, at Chelsea High School and then Randolph Academy. He was baptized in 1827, and began preaching and holding meetings in area. He was licensed in June 1836, by the Corinth, Quarterly Meeting, and continued with meetings in New York and into Pennsylvania for about three years, and was ordained May 27, 1837.
In 1846, the Free Baptist Home Mission Society appointed Rev. Bixby and his wife, Ruby, to go to Iowa territory as missionaries. They paid expenses for the trip, and afterward sent about one-hundred dollars. They travelled by canal, the Lakes by boat, and horse to Wis, where they were with the Pike Grove church for a short time, and then, in June 1847, reached Iowa. They settled in Lodomillo, later Edgewood. He was the only ordained Free Baptist minister in Iowa.
There, he began to gather a church. In about a year he and his wife, had four churches organized into a Quarterly meeting, and by 1853 had fourteen churches. Their labors continued to receive the divine blessing.
After he lost his wife in 1877, he continued to occupy a position of great influence in the state. He was five times a member of the General Conference and was active in caring for all the denominational interests."
