Dora Thorson Passes

Dora Thorson, 81, former Carter area resident, died July 17, 1982 in San Jose, California. Services were held in Great Falls, Thursday, July 22 with Rev. Phil Shull officiating. Pallbearers were Harlan Orham, Maurice Orham, Dennis Bennett, Paul Jordan, Don Caveny and Maynard Conway. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Dora Rockey was born August 16, 1900 in Poland, Indiana near Terre Haute. After the loss of her mother, her father brought her and the other three children to homestead near Carter in 1910. She eloped with Thomas Benton Koger at the age of 18 and settled on a farm near Carter where her husband also homesteaded.

Her husband died 12 years later leaving her with three young children and 320 acres. She moved to Fort Benton so her children could attend high school and then to Bozeman for two to attend college. She and her daughter, Nina, enrolled in beauty school. The next spring they moved to Townsend where she started her career, retiring at age 75.

She married Theodore Thorson in 1945 and they lived in Carter for a few years until his death, when she went to Missoula. She moved to California to be hear her daughter several years ago. She was preceded in death by two sisters, a brother and a nephew. Survivors include three daughters, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
