Irish Nationalist. Took part in the Easter Rising of 1916, for which he was sentenced to death, later reprieved to hard labor for life. Released 1917. Arrested again that year for agitation. Led other prisoners on hunger strike, during the course of which he died. His funeral procession was followed by 30,000 sympathizers.
