KILLBUCK — Gloria Maxine (Reiss) Brightwell Almack, 83, of Killbuck died Tuesday evening, March 3, 2009, at Wooster Community Hospital in Wooster following a short illness.
Funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, with Pastor John Damron officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Millersburg. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Holmes County Hospice, the Arthritis Foundation, the Killbuck Library or the Holmes County Senior Center.
She was born Nov. 3, 1925, in Coshocton County and was the daughter of Lewis Byson and Lena Anna (Burchardt) Reiss. On Sept. 18, 1945, she married Charles W. Brightwell, who died in July 1965. She later married Ralph A. Almack, and he died March 11, 1997.
She was a graduate of Warsaw High School, class of 1943. She had many community volunteer hours to her credit. In Coshocton County, a 4-H advisor of Big Run Road Runners for six years, past president of Warsaw Elementary PTA, past State of Ohio president of Military Order of Ladies Bugs and VFW 1330 Ladies Auxiliary Sec. of two years. During World War II, she was a B-25 and P-38 Bullet Proof Gasoline Airplane Tank builder and inspector at Firestone.
In Holmes County, she was a past Brownie Scout Troop Leader, past president of Daughters of America, past president of Ladies Christian Fellowship, Eagles Sec. of two years, active at Holmes County Senior Center and a bingo caller for one year, and a five-year volunteer at Castle Nursing Home and was employed there for three years. She was a Stanley Dealer and restaurant cook. She took care of the elderly for 10 years at her home and baby sitter for seven years. She also wrote a poem for a book at Millersburg High School Band about Otto Elliot's years as band director, was a member of the Red Hat Society and was a foster grandparent at Killbuck Elementary School. She was a member of the Killbuck Church of Christ and sang in the choir.
Surviving are three daughters and their spouses, Cheryl (Charles) Starner of Brinkhaven, Phyllis (Thomas) Smail of Killbuck and Paget (Mike) Lynch of Illinois; a son. Robert Brightwell of Toledo; six grandchildren, Veronica Morrison, Ezra Starner, Scott Smail, Jennifer Smail, Cory Lynch and Sara Brightwell; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Thomas and Shannon; six sisters, Anna, Ruth, Blanche, Esther, Mary and Minnetta; a son, Charles Jr.; and two great-grandchildren, Heidi and Larry.
