HICKMAN PIONEER, L.N. MIRES, DIES

Lewis N. Mires, pioneer resident of the Hickman district, died in Modesto Tuesday following an illness. Mires settled in Stanislaus county in the early '70's, coming from San Joaquin county where he was born in 1856.

For many years he was a rancher but he retired several years ago.

He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Kate Mires, and the following children: Mrs. G.N. (Hazel Adell) LaSource, Hickman; (Arthur) Roy Mires of San Francisco and E.L. (Edson Lewis) Mires of Modesto, and three brothers and sisters, Robert G. Mires of Waterville, Washington; G.S. (George S.) Mires of Hanford and Mrs. Anne Edwards of Los Angeles.

Mires was for many years president of the Turlock Irrigation District board, representing the Hickman division. Not only the Turlock district but the Modesto as well owes much of its success to his efforts for he was active at a time when irrigation bonds required stabilization. He was considered always progressive and of the highest integrity.

He moved here about eight years ago. It was he who built one of the first garages in Modesto. At the time of his death he owned the garage on Ninth street between I and J.

About a year ago he sold his large holdings of land near Hickman, about 1000 acres, to Walter Scoup.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Shannon Funeral Chapel, 921 Twelfth street. The Rev. Marcus P. McClure will officiate.

Interment will be in Park View crematory, Manteca.

Lewis was the son of Sanford and Sophrona (Deardorff) Mires.
