Funeral services for William Matthew Callahan, Sr., 89, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. David Urban. Interment will be at 2:30 in Sanders Chapel Cemetery in Calvin, Louisiana. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 15, 2011 at the funeral home.

William was born on November 12, 1921 in New York, NY and was raised in a Catholic orphanage. He married his wife, Lena Carson, on September 16, 1951. He was an Engineer Gunner B-26, 554 Bomb Squadron, 386 Bomb Grp. He was a POW in Germany and received several medals including a Purple Heart, a member of MOPH. William was a M/SGT in the USAF for 21 years before he retired. He later worked in the U.S. Post Office. He was an avid golfer.

His wife of 49 years, Lena Carson Callahan and son-in-law, Dennis "Bo" Boyett, preceded him in death. William is survived by children, Sheila Boyett, Matt Callahan, Jr., and Thomas Callahan, 3 grandchildren, William Alan Boyett, Cheryl Boyett, and Carolyn Boyett, 2 sisters-in-law, Eloise Carson Haymon, and Shirley Carson, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Naline Sloan at the VAMC, Dr. Roy Fleniken and the NW LA Veterans Home, and the employees who took special care of our dad.
