Mrs. Betts was born January 31, 1900 in Leon County to Hollon Dickey and E.R. Ward. She had been a resident of Leon County all of her life. Mrs. Betts died Monday in Jewett, Texas on June 10, 1985.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jewett; Buffalo Eastern Star,Chapter No. 157; Jewett Home Extension Club; and Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Betts taught school in Leon County for 42 years.
Survivors include her son, Houston Edward Betts of Pasadena; brother, D.E. Ward of Ennis; sisters, Ennis Payne of Diboll, Maggie Thompson of Redland Community and Mattie Bent of Montgomery; 2 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Troy Shields, Jarvis Hassell, Reginald Hassell, Bud Ward, Joe Bennett Thompson and Oliver Lee Payne.
Honorary pallbearers were Mike Williams and Bill Boyd.
Green Funeral Home of Centerville, Texas were in charge of funeral arrangements.
