AUSLANDER, STANLEY E., 89, a longtime Warwick resident and veteran of World War II died, March 30, 2007 at Kent Hospital. He was the husband of the late Jean Hamilton Auslander to whom he was married for 55 years.
Born in New York City, he was the son of Alfred and Rougea Auslander who had emigrated from Vienna, Austria. He attended NYU and graduated in 1939 from Hofstra University of Hempstead, N.Y. with its first graduating class. He joined the Navy in 1941, completing flight training in November. As a naval aviator he flew convoy patrol in the South and North Atlantic. While stationed at Belem, Brazil in 1943, he was credited with the sinking of a German U-boat and the damage of another. Later in the war he flew patrol out of Dunkeswell, England. For his service he was awarded two air medals and a distinguished flying cross. While stationed at Quonset in 1942, he met Jean Hamilton at a dance in East Greenwich. They were married in 1944.
He was discharged from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1945. He worked for the Brown Paper Company of Berlin, New Hampshire, before returning to Rhode Island with his family to start the Hamilton-Auslander Manufacturing Co. based in West Warwick with his brother-in-law David Hamilton. A specialty chemical company, it primarily sold textile finishes and developed flame retardants including Nylo-gard. He also worked for the National Combustion Co. of Corona, New York and the Agawam Dye Works of West Warwick.
He was active in community affairs for many years. In 1957 he was a member of the City of Warwick charter commission. In 1959 he was the chairman of the membership campaign for the Warwick-East Greenwich branch of the Providence YMCA. He then helped establish this as the Kent County YMCA with the purchase of land and served on the board for several years. He was on the Board of Trustees of Kent County Hospital for 25 years. He volunteered with the Warwick Red Cross and in retirement was a volunteer with Insight in Warwick.
He enjoyed tennis and golf, and skated and skied with his family. He was an early member of the Warwick Heights Tennis Club and was a member of the University Club. He had memberships at the Dunes Club, Point Judith Country Club, Potowomut Golf Club, and Castine Maine Golf Club. He was a member of Academy Players of East Greenwich and the Varnum Continentals for many years.
He was a member of St. Luke's Church in East Greenwich. He served on the vestry, played in the bell choir, and was an usher. After his wife's death in 1999 he spent much time visiting ailing longtime friends at home or in nursing homes around the state. After living in Warwick for 50 years he sold the house he and his wife had built in Cowessett and lived for several years at the Seasons in East Greenwich.
He was a lifetime member of the U.S. Navel Reserve Association and served as a representative to the Canadian Navel Reserve. In 2004 he received a special commendation from the Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame for his aviation accomplishments in World War II.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail A. Ginnetty and by his son, Dean H. Auslander of Warren, Vermont.
Burial office will be celebrated at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 99 Peirce St., East Greenwich on Saturday April 14 at 11:00 AM. Internment in the memorial garden will be private.
