W.A. "Bill" Ward, 65 Dies After Brief Illness

Funeral services for William Alfred "Bill" Ward, 65, 513 Oak St., who died at 6:05 p.m. Monday at McCune-Brooks Hospital where he was admitted earlier, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Ulmer Funeral Home.

Bob Lyttle, minister, will officiate and burial will be in Park Cemetery.

Born May 11, 1919, in Mountain Grove, Mr. Ward was a shell house foreman for Hercules Powder Company. He retired in 1982 after 38 years with the company.

He was married to Nadine Hodge May 25, 1939, at Mt. Vernon.

Survivors include his wife; two sons David Ward, 509 Oak St., and Eugene Ward, 503 E. 13th St.; three daughters Mary Williams, Route 6; Carmen Davis, 803 Orner St., and Helen Elizabeth Ward , 513 Oak St.; his mother Mrs. Myrtle Riley, 618 Orner St.; three brothers Olen Ward, Neosho; Joe Ward, Rogers, Ark., and Jack Ward, Joplin; four sisters Helen Lynn, 717 E. Chestnut St., Loretta McBride, 618 Orner St., Artist Jean Buus, Miller, and Dorothy Foraker, Kansas City; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

JOPLIN, MO — Nadine Lorene Ward, 92, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Elizabeth Clark, Joplin, Mo., where she had been loved and cared for the past six years due to a long courageous battle with arthritis and other health issues.

Nadine was born on Jan. 25, 1918, in Reeds, Mo., to the late Jesse Edward Hodge and Mary Maudney (Foster) Hodge.

Nadine will always be remembered as a devoted, loving wife and mother. She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

Nadine was a member of the First Christian Church in Carthage.

She was a homemaker. Nadine loved cooking and to cook for other people. She is especially known for her pies.

Nadine also liked to quilt, until arthritis crippled her hands.

Nadine married the late William "Bill" Ward on May 25, 1939, in Mount Vernon, Mo. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1984.

Nadine is survived by her five children, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark and husband Brad, Joplin, Carmen Ford, Mary Williams and husband Don, David Ward and Eugene Ward and wife Clara, all of Carthage, Mo.; two sisters, Hazel Griffith, Sarcoxie, Mo., and Lavonne "Bonnie" Jacobsen and husband Walt, Lincoln, Neb.; one brother, Richard Harold Hodge, Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Nadine is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one infant son, William Wayne Ward (May 15, 1942); four brothers, Edward William Hodge, Johnny L. Hodge, Jessie Edward Hodge Jr. and Virgil Franklin Hodge; and six sisters, Peggy Leora Hodge, Opal Blanche Taylor, Pearl Grace Helton, Fayenell Pauline Forrest, Viola Maxine Dunker and Fanny Lucille Hodge.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Ulmer Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
