Major League Baseball Player. For nine seasons (1943, 1946 to 1953), he played at the outfielder position with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. Born Eugene Victor Hermanski, he was raised in Newark, New Jersey, where he was a star player at East Side High School. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Athletics in 1939, he eventually ended up with the Dodgers' organization. After attending Seton Hall University, he broke into the Majors with Brooklyn on August 15, 1943, and appeared in 18 games that season, posting a .300 batting average. His career would yield to service in the US Navy and Coast Guard during World War II. Hermanski was a member of two National League Pennant-winning teams (1947 and 1949 Dodgers), recording 32 career World Series at bats, with 7 hits, 3 runs driven in and a .219 batting average. He batted .308 during the 1949 World Series. In addition Hermanski was a member of the 1947 Dodgers' squad, which held historic significance as Jackie Robinson played his first year in the league with them that season. In 739 career regular season games, he compiled 533 hits, with a lifetime .272 batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked as a sales representative.
