He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. His survivors include his father, Gerald E. and Marlene Cornelius of Ashtabula; his mother, Valerie and Bob Silleck of Ashtabula; one brother, 2LT Eric V. Cornelius of Ft. Rucker, AL; his grandparents, Carmen "Lefty" Corbissero and Celeste Corbissero, both of Ashtabula; his step-brothers, Robert Fortune, and John "Jack" Fortune, his step-sister, Kelly Romano, his aunt, Vanessa Petrosky; three uncles, Carl Corbissero, William E. Cornelius, Jr., and Theodore E. Cornelius; and numerous cousins, extended family, and friends.
