"Elsie Parish McCrory was born in Cincinnati, Ohio September 11 1810, died at Nevada, Ind. at the home of her youngest daughter Mrs. Mary Gray, on January 18, 1899 being at the time of her death aged 88 years four months and seven days. Elsie McCrory was the fifth child of Zacharia and Phoeba Parish. At the age of eleven, the deceased came with an uncle to Fayette county, Indiana. On her eighteenth birthday she was united in marriage with Samuel McCrory. To this union was born seven children, Jane Wikoff, Phoeba Irvin, Susan Rea, John McCrory, Margaret Caldwell, Sarah, who died in infancy, and Mary Gray. In March of the year 1881 Samuel McCrory, husband of the deceased, died. In the following year John McCrory, the only son followed the father to the land of rest. Two weeks after, Margaret Caldwell, his nearest sister went to meet her brother on the eternal shore. In the year 1896 Susan Rea, third daughter of Elsie and Samuel McCrory departed this life. Four children and her husband having preceded her home she leaves behind to mourn her loss her three daughters Jane, Phoeba and Mary, one sister, Elizabeth Caldwell, of Greentown, Indiana and one brother John Parrish, of Falmouth, Indiana, nineteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grand children and has had two great great grand children. In 1810 [sic 1829] Elsie McCrory came with her husband to Rush county, Indiana to the farm which she owned at the time of her death. Her home at that time was a wilderness and with true pioneer fortitude she helped her husband clear away the thick forest. All her life she has been a hard worker. Her hand to the very last went seeking some useful work to do. She was a devoted wife and a kind mother, not only this but her heart went out to humanity at large and the homeless ones in the world. There was no time in her housekeeping days that she did not give a home to someone beside her own children. In 1848 she united with the Christian church at Fairview, Indiana. For fifty years the deceased has been a most earnest and exemplary member of the same church." [Obituary received from McCrory descendant mjcm.]
