O. M. Jones, a native of Shenandoah, Va., has been a resident of Highland Township since 1870, and is well and favorably known in this community as possessed of qualities which constitute an honest man and good citizen. The birth of our subject took place in 1813, and his parents were Thomas and Nancy (Wood) Jones, both natives of the Old Dominion. About ten years after the birth of their son they removed to Ohio and settled in Gallia County, where they lived for ten years. Thence they went to Fulton county Illinois, where for a period of forty years our subject engaged in farming pursuits, and in 1870 came to Wapello County, Iowa, and located in Highland Township on section 16, which constitutes his present homestead. His farm includes 205 acres of valuable land, to which he has added many improvements since it came into his possession.

Mr. Jones was united in marriage with Miss Mary Cozad, a native of Illinois, who by her union with our subject became the mother of the following children: Nancy married to Thomas Livingston, of Page County, Iowa; Sarah (Sophia), Mrs. Elias Shaw, lives in Fulton County, Ill.; Mary Ann became the wife of Henry Oviatt, of Fulton County, Il. The mother of these children departed this life on the 1st of February, 1844, and for his second wife Mr. Jones married Miss Caroline Buffum, a native of Ohio, who bore him six children, as follows, Thomas L., during the late war, enlisted in the 103rd Illinois Infantry, and was killed at the battle of Lookout Mountain, November 24, 1863; Richard died at home June 22, 1862, at the age of sixteen years; Sarah became the wife of Amaziah Shaw, and lives in Kansas; George W. is a resident of Fulton County, Ill.; Isaac N. lives in Wayne County, Iowa; Betsy A. married John Wycoff, of McDonough County, Ill. Mrs. Caroline Jones departed this life Jan. 23, 1870, and for his third wife Mr. J. married Mrs Eliza Summers, in August, 1870. Of this marriage there were born three children—Alice W., Lemuel W. and Benjamin C., all at home.

Mr. Jones is a member of the Missionary Baptist and his wife of the Christian Church. Our subject takes an intelligent interest in the affairs of his township, and has served as School Director for a period of twelve years. He has engaged in farming pursuits the greater part of his life, although he followed milling for three years in Illinois. He was only two years old when his father died, and was reared by his stepfather, who trained him to habits of industry by which he became fitted for the later duties of life, which he was enabled to grapple with success.

OBITUARY

JONES—Oliver M. Jones, at his residence in Highland township, Dec. 5, 1887, aged 74 years. About eighteen months ago he had a stroke of paralysis; two months ago he had the second stroke and on Sunday evening, near midnight, received the third, remaining conscious, but speechless until noon the next day, when he became unconscious and remained so until 6 o'clock p.m., when he passed peacefully to eternity.

The deceased was born in 1813 in Shenandoah, Va. This father died when he was two years old. When about ten his mother and step father moved to Ohio where he lived five years. He then came to Fulton County, Illinois, with an uncle, where he married and resided until 1868, when he moved to Highland township where he has since lived.

Mr. Jones was living with his third wife who, with ten children, are left to mourn their loss. Seven of his children are married; five of whom, one boy and four daughters, live in Illinois, one son and a daughter reside in Southwestern Iowa. Three young children, one girl and two boys are yet at home. The deceased was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, living a conscientious Christian life. Although suffering severe pain in his last hours he was calm and resigned telling his friends that he was willing and ready to die.

The funeral services took place on Wednesday, the 7th, at his late residence and was conducted by Rev. Wiggins, of Ottumwa.

All of his children except two were present, who, with a large number of neighbors and friends, followed his remains to the McCormick cemetery where the interment took place.

Mr. Jones was a most excellent citizen; a very kind and indulgent husband and father, very patient and even tempered; a wise and prudent counselor; an obliging neighbor who enjoyed the confidence, love and esteem of all who knew him. Mrs. Jones desires to thank the friends for their assistance and kindness, and the friends wish to extend to the bereaved wife and children their warmest, heartfelt sympathy and condolence in this their sad affliction.
