John Bass Dean Jr. was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He was shot in bootcamp and never left the States. (Later he said there was a rule that no one was ever supposed to shoot down range, but someone did.) He was transferred to the Air Force where he spent the rest of the war refueling small aircraft and bootlegging.
