News from Milano. Word was received here this morning that the ship Guthrie Layne was on had been sunk and he was among the missing. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie Layne of Milano and had been with the navy about three years. The Cameron Herald, March 19, 1942

Served in Philippines, Battle of Macassar Strait and Java Sea Battle. Killed in 1942 in JAVA (sic) Sea on USS Houston. Men and Women in the Armed Forces from Milam County, Texas

Layne, Jr., U.S.N., compiled aboard the USS Houston (CA-30) from November 2, 1940 through October 2, 1941, was graciously donated to Texas A&M University by his family. It has been scanned and is available for viewing online as a part of the Military History Collection of the Cushing Library.
