Cecil Errick Tannahill, one of 13 children of Mary Robinson and George H. Tannahill was born on July 20, 1897, in Phillips County, Kan., near Long Island and departed life on July 3, 1986 at the Regency Health Care Center at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 13 days. At the age of nine, Cecil moved with his family to Vernon, Kan., where the family became well known and contributed to the advancement of the area. Hard work and lots of fun were the order of the day in the Tannahill household. With so many children, everyone had their task to do. On October 21, 1926, Cecil and Sophia Alta Kesterson were united in marriage. Sophia was a teacher in the Vernon schools. They moved to Neosho Falls where Cecil had an auto repair shop. Upon the death of Sophia's mother, Eliza Kesterson, the couple moved to the farm of Isaac Kesterson, Northeast of Yates Center which was to be their life long home. They have one daughter, Carol Ruther Peterson, of Macksville, Kan.
Cecil was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Yates Center, was one of the first members of the Woodson County Co-op Association and served on the Board in the early years. Cecil and Sophia were both charter members of the Woodson County Historical Society. Their daughter survives as well as a son-in-law, Donald K. Peterson, grandchildren Tanna Peterson Faulkner of St. John, Kan., Beth Peterson Irvin of Living Water Ranch, Olsburg, Kan., and Lynn Peterson of Kinsley, Kan., and of course to his extreme delight, three great-grandchildren Whitney Lynn Faulkner, Sean Thomas Faulkner and Braden Chase Irvin. Also surviving is one sister, Iva Bushman of Iola, Kan., plus many nieces and nephews.
Services in his memory were conducted on Monday, July 7, 1986, from the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert and Jeanne Howell officiating. Burial was in the Yates Center Cemetery.
