Lura (Perdue) Higgins, after a four months illness, died Thursday, June 13, at her home in Fairmont, NE, at the age of 69 years 11 months 13 days. She is survived by her husband, U G Higgins and six children.

Lura P Higgins was born in Abington, IL, in 1870. At the age of Seven her parents, Joseph Clark and Emeline Lea Perdue came to Lincoln, NE, where they resided at 9th and M St. and later moved to the Hartley Farm three miles north of Lincoln on N 14th St.

In 1882 her father died and the widow, Emiline Perdue and her family, consisting of: John L, Lura P, Jessie M, Frances M and Harry Clifford, moved to a homestead seven miles northeast of Cambridge, NE, where they lived in a sod house.

As a young pioneer, Lura P Higgins drove a horse and buggy thirty five miles each week to give music lessons at Stockville. At the age of 18, Lura married Ulysses G Higgins at Indianola, NE. The first two years of her married life was spent on a homestead about twenty miles northwest of Cambridge at the head of Line Creek. In 1892 the family moved to Spring Ranch three miles east of Cambridge. In 1908, the family moved to a farm six miles east of Nelson, where they resided until 1914, when they moved to Fairmont.

Lura P Higgins was the mother of eight children, as follows: John Clifford, Leita Maude, Grace May, Dewie Malina, Leslie Ray, Lois Blanche, Clarence Clark and Lettie Faye. All are living except Leita Maude and Leslie Ray who died in infancy.

Of the children living: John C Married Bess V McDonald of Fairmont; Grace M married Ingward Holm on Maxwell, NE; Dewie M married Ross Williams of Mansfield, MO; Lois B married Dr Omer Sperry of Alpine, TX; Clarence C Married Juanda Cunningham of Chicago and Lettie Faye has remained at home up to the death of her mother. Mr Higgins is also survived by eight grandchildren.

Lura P Higgins was a pioneering mother of the Nebraska prairies. She was a Valiant church worker, from Sunday School teacher in a sod school house to work as a member of the Fairmont Federated Church. She was a faithful worker in the American legion Auxiliary and local Sunset Club.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the Cambridge Cemetery. Rev Savage of the Evangelical Church gave a short memorial service taken from St John, chapter 3 verse 13. Music was furnished by: Lloyd Richardson, Mrs Dan Dick, Mrs Frank Marple and Dan Dick.

Out of town relatives attending were: U G Higgins, Faye and Clifford of Fairmont, Mrs Grace Holm and son Neil, and Mr and Mrs H T Woodgate of North Platte, and a wide circle of fiends.
