Bruce A. Campbell
Bruce A. Campbell died suddenly on January 15, 2007 while chopping wood at a neighbor's house. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on October 17, 1930. He grew up in Amsterdam, New York and graduated from high school there.
From 1950 to 1954 he served in the United States Navy, principally in Port Barrow, Alaska. Upon graduation from New York State Forest Ranger School in 1956, he moved to Olympia, where he was employed by the United States Forest Service. He then worked for the Washington State Highway Department as a civil engineer.
In 1978, he received the Dr. L.I. Hewes Award for his outstanding contribution to transportation development. Bruce retired from the Washington State Department of Transportation in 1982. Bruce headed the Olympia Ski School from 1965 to 1974, and skiing was always an important part of his life. Other interests included traveling, hiking, woodworking, and motorcycling.
He and his wife, Mary, taught English in China from 1983 to 1984. After returning from China, he worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, did consulting with various engineering firms, and volunteered at Fort Bowie National Park. Bruce was always deeply committed to his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ewen Campbell, with whom he recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; his two sons, Glen and Douglas, and their wives, Deborah and Denise; and two grandchildren, Karl and Christine.
