In June of 1772 his father Rev. David Jones (the patriotic pastor) and Morgan's uncle Morgan Jones met with George Rogers Clark who surveyed hundreds of acres of land for the brothers in the Moundsville/Grave Creek area.
As payment for service in the Revolutionary War, Morgan's father David was given 3,098 acres of land grants which included much of Moundsville, Grave Creek Mound, along the Grave Creek itself and acres in Licking Co., Ohio.
Morgan became a surveyor. In 1793 Morgan surveyed eleven thousand acres of land by the Allegheny river in North central PA. In 1798 he moved to this area married and he was appointed surveyor for Ohio County, WV.
Morgan first married Sarah Griffith 1 Jun 1798 in Ohio Co., WV. They had 10 children:
1. Mary Griffith, 1798-1831, m. Jos. Hamilton, 6 ch
2. David, 1799-1863 OR, m. R. McClean, 8 ch
3. Elizabeth Bartholomew, 1801-1860 DC, m. Wm S. Morgan, 5 ch
4. Isaac, 1803-1812 VA(WV)
5. Horatio Gates 1804-1884 NE, m. N. Martin, 11 ch
6. Joseph B., b. abt 1805 d. unk OH
7. Ellen b. abt 1807?-unk
8. Morgan, 1809?-unk
9. Archibald b. abt. 1811?-unk
10. Ann b. 1812?-unk
After Sarah died on 12 Apr 1812, Morgan married Nancy McKnight on 2 Jul 1812 and they had 4 children together:
1. Rebecca, 1813-unk
2. Archibald, 1816-1879
3. Jane, 1819-aft 1878 - marr. John H. Knox
4. Rachel, 1823-aft 1870
Sadly, even though Morgan had many aptitudes and was given various large tracts of grant land by his father, money was not one of his priorities. Bit by bit he sold off acres for their living costs. After Morgan died in 1840, his 2nd wife Nancy lived in the county poor house.
