Orlando, who resided in Lincoln, Delaware, served as a 1st Lieutenant, 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.
He enlisted in the Army on January 29 1935 and served in Panama for 5 years. He was then assigned to Pearl Harbor, September 1940 and survived the attack on December 7th. Shortly after the bombing, Orlando wrote home stating "he'd been blown out of his cot" at the beginning of the raid and had then reported to his commanding officer at Schofield Barracks and did duty throughout the day.
In 1942 he went to OCS at Fort Benning, Georgia where he was promoted to 2nd Lt. He applied for overseas duty and joined the Rangers.
He was a member of the famous "Darby's Rangers" led by Wiliam Orlando Darby.
Orlando later "Died Of Wounds" received in action 7 days after the fall of Salerno, Italy.
He had served in the Army for eight years and eight months at the time of his death and was decorated with a "Silver Star" and Purple Heart.
