Philip E. Horan, Jr. was born on 8 July 1918 in Omaha, Nebraska. In preparation for college, he attended Central High School in Omaha, spent one year at St. John's Military School at Delafield, Wisconsin, and another year in Europe where he attended the Alliance Francaise in Paris, France.
He entered the Military Academy on 1 July 1938 graduating from West Point on 29 May 1942. He enterred Infantry Basic Officers Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. From there he was assigned to the newly activated 104th (Timberwolf) Infantry Division at Camp Adair, Oregon. He had numerous command and staff assignments with the 414th Infantry Regiment during the training of his division at Camp Adair, at desert training centers in both California and Arizona, and at Camp Carson, Colorado.
It was while he was stationed at Camp Adair that he met Mary Alice Janke whom he married on 22 January 1944 at Fort Benning.
When his regiment was deployed to Europe in August 1945, Phil was the service company commander, a position for which he had been especially selected in order to straighten out, prior to overseas movement, the supply and maintenance activities overburdened by months of field training.
Based upon his repeated requests he was soon placed in command of I Company of the 414th Infantry Regiment which he led through several bitter conflicts. It was this same company that he was commanding on 15 April 1945 at Halle when he was hit by German small arms fire. Phil was respected by all those who knew him and was a friend to many members of the Timberwolf Division. For gallantry in action, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.
