Casualty of WWII, Robert entered the service from Massachusetts. Lt.Simmons served as a Bombardier with the 849th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group,Heavy.He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.His service number was 0-694969.
The following information kindly provided by Christina Brenner:

B-17G Flying Fortress 43-37776 490th BG 849 BS
The aircraft,named "Heavenly Body", was on a night cross-country exercise. Whilst turning, just North of Nailstone, near Ibstock,Leicestershire, the aircraft's nose dropped, and the port wing struck the ground. The machine was completely destroyed by fire and explosion. Sadly, all on board were killed.
