Funeral services were held Wednesday for Mr. J. J. Sheffield who died in a Jasper hospital Tuesday.
Uncle Jim as he was familiarly known was born December 17, 1886, died July 22, 1941. He was born in Early County, Georgia, and came to Texas in 1885. He became a member of the Free Will Baptist Church at the age of 14 and was a faithful worker until he died.
He had eight brothers and two sisters. He was married to Elizabeth Hawthorne in 1887 and there were born into this family nine children; J. P. Sheffield, Sour Lake Texas, A. L. Sheffield Jasper Texas, Mrs. A. E. Adams, Mrs. H. W. Behannon, J. N. Sheffield, E. M. Sheffield, B. R. Sheffield, and R. E. Sheffield all of Roganville, and Mrs. H. T. Burnett of Newton. He had thirty one grand children and seventeen great grand children.
He was a pioneer settler, a devoted Christian loved by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held by Bro. T. W. Smith of Kirbyville. Burial was in the Friendship Cemetery and burial arrangements were under the direction of Stringer Funeral Home of Jasper.
