Captain Robert Asa Abbott U.S. Marine Corps dive bomber pilot was killed in action in the Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific. His father W.C. Abbott, was notified Wednesday noon. Robert's wife Helen, infant daughter, mother and sister were residing in La Jolla, CA. at the of his death.

Captain Abbott had departed the San Diego Marine base in late August for duty in the Pacific war theater.

Robert was born December 1, 1915 to William and Helen Abbott in Rupert. He attended Moscow high school and graduated from the University of Idaho in Moscow with degree in journalism. Upon graduation he was a commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Marine Corps and sent to Philadelphia for a year of training. Robert later chose to enter aviation service and began his pilot training in Pensacola and Miami Beach, FL. He was then assigned to the Marine base at Quantico, VA.

Robert was a member of Delta Chi fraternity and the Masonic Lodge. He married his wife the former Helen Powell in 1940. Helen and their infant daughter plan on returning to Moscow and making their home there.
