Principal Chief of the Creek Nation (Muskogee). Born near Sodom, Creek Nation. Family moved to Springtown, near Broken Arrow, then moved to Tulsa. Lived where the George Perryman Homestead is now located. Half-brother to Rev.Thomas Ward Perryman. Civil War: C.S.A. Co H 1st Creek Mounted Volunteers; in 1862, he and several of his brothers renounced the CSA and joined the (Union) 1st Regiment Indian Home Guards, Co I, in Kansas. Promoted to Sgt., mustered out in 1865.
Married Apaye (Jennie) in 1864; parents of Henry W. Perryman, b. 1876. His wife died in Tulsa in 1904.
Son of Lewis Perryman and wife Ellen Winslett Perryman.
In 1868, he was elected by the Creek Council as District Judge for the Coweta District, serving 6 years on the bench. He resigned, and in 1874, was elected by Big Spring Town to represent said Town in the House of Warriors to fill the unexpired term, caused by the death of his brother, Sanford W. Perryman. In 1875 he was elected again for full term, same house--also in 1879--also again same place in 1883, and served to Dec 3, 1887.
He was elected as Principal Chief at a General Election held first Tuesday in September 1887, and took the Oath of Office December 5, 1887. His 2nd Chief was Hon. Hofulke Emarthla of Okchaye Town. He was again selected on first Tuesday in September 1891. In 1895, he was impeached and removed from office due to turmoil over the revelation of tribal financial irregularities; he made no fight against this and may have been duped by other Creek men, rather than being responsible for the losses himself.
