Son of Mr. and Mrs. Kazimer Kalenik who resided in Buffalo, New York.

Joseph served as a Gunner's Mate, 1st Class, U.S.S. Bismarck Sea (CVE-95), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

The Bismarck Sea, while support the battle of Iwo Jima, was hit by two Japanese kamikazes and sank during the war. 318 crewmen, out of a crew of 923, were lost in this sinking during the war. The Bismarck Sea was the last US Navy aircraft carrier to be lost during World War II.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
