2nd Lieutenant Hoffman was Killed In Action aboard U.S. Army Air Corps
B-29-40-BW Superfortress #42-24622, nicknamed "Lucky Irish." While on the first
B-29 bombardment mission to Tokyo from the Marianas Islands, target the
Musashino Aircraft Engine Factory, was shot down by enemy Ki-44 fighter and
spiralled into the sea 20 miles from shore, with the loss of all eleven crew.
With the 497th Bomb Group, 870th Bomb Squadron.
