Son of Vincent D. Cunningham who resided in Atlanta, Georgia.

John served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24L #44-49607, 9th Bomber Squadron, 7th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Atlanta, Georgia prior to the war.

B-24L #44-49607 took off, with a crew of 10, from Pandaveswar Airfield, India on an objective bombing mission over a railroad bridge on the Burma-Siam Railway. Soon after takeoff they experienced engine trouble. The pilot was unable to feather the engine and gave the command to bailout. 6 of the crew were able to bailout successfully and 4 were not.

John was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart.
