Reuben Stahl Dead
Prominent Citizen and Well Known Contractor
Death Came to Him Suddenly at His Home This Morning – Probably
Due to Paralysis
Reuben Stahl, one of the well-known residents of Fort Wayne
and for a number of years a prominent carpenter contractor, died
this forenoon at 10:30 o'clock at his home, 808 East Lewis Street.
His death was somewhat sudden and unexpected. He suffered a
stroke of paralysis on the 22 nd of last December, but had
recovered from its affects and was able to be around. Yesterday,
although complaining some, he was about the house and walked
down the street, retiring to bed at his usual hour last evening. This
morning he arose at 8 o'clock and was complaining of pains in his
stomach. Later he was seized with convulsions. A physician was
called, but all efforts to save his life were unavailing and he
passed away at the hour above mentioned. The exact cause of
death is unknown, and a post-mortem examination is being held
this afternoon.
Mr. Stahl was nearly 67 years of age. He was born in
Pennsylvania and after he reached young manhood followed the
trade of a carpenter. He came to this city in 1881 and worked as a
carpenter on the Library Ball Building. Later he engaged in
business for himself as a carpenter contractor and followed it for
years. He was also engaged in the real estate business. He was
married in Kendallville thirty-eight years ago to Miss Barbara
Stadtmiller. She, with six sons and six daughters' survive. The
children are as follows: Miss Grace Stahl, living at home; Mrs. C. I.
Mendenhall of Indianapolis; Mrs. Frank Scheid of Toledo; Mrs.
George McCullom of Muskegon; Mrs. Val Rocholl and Mrs. F. J.
Ruch of this city; Charles, Perry, Frederick and Harvey Stahl, of
this city; Henry Stahl of Toledo and William Stahl, of Muskegon.
Charles, one of the sons, is well-known in baseball circles as
"Chic" Stahl. He is a member of the Boston team. He is now at St.
Louis, but will arrive here tomorrow.
Mr. Stahl, during his over twenty years of residence in this city,
was well-known and high esteemed, and the news of his death will
be received with sorrow by his wide circle of friends.
