My paternal grandmother Edith was one of the greatest cooks I have ever known. She cooked a sheer lifetime worth of recipes, made just so and always encouraged you to eat past the point of comfort. She poured her love into each morsel with a dinstinct consistency that only "grandma" could make. Her home was truly her castle. There was no place as safe, warm or welcoming.
Edith loved to tell stories and was a true writer. A published author (Readers Digest), she was addicted to crossword puzzles and keeping up with the latest news. She called faithfully every Sunday and not one birthday or holiday passed without a card and check. At the end of each visit, like clockwork, she'd always tell my grandfather to slip some cash in my pocket. When I thanked her, she always told me, "Use it in good health."
My grandmother taught me more than about anyone I know. She taught me to focus on life and not on death, and for good reason: In her life, she witnessed the passing of her parents, both siblings and two husbands. She knew pain and disappointment, but what made her so rich and full of dimension, was her capacity to radiate joy through years of hardship. She was the very essence of life, quality, compassion and humor. She insisted on living life to the fullest till the very end. She passed away in November of 2000 after a valiant fight with cancer.
