"The LaFayette Sun" - June 5, 1901:
Down at Chiggerville.
Died, on last Thursday morning at 8:30 o’clock, Mr. Peter Abernathy, son of Mr. David H. B. Abernathy, of beat 5. He was 21 years of age, and had been afflicted with consumption ever since he was quite an infant. He was a close reader of the Bible, and a few moments before his death he called the family and other friends around his bedside, expressing a willingness to go, telling them that he was prepared to meet his Savior. He had been, all his life, gentle and kind, and was one of our most moral young men and was beloved by everyone. He remains was interred in the cemetery at Macedonia the day following his death, Elder Satterwhite performing the funeral services. We, with a host of other friends, extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. A more lengthy and appropriate account of his death will appear in next week’s issue of the Sun, written by Brother Satterwhite.

Peter H. Abernathy.
Peter was the son of D. H. B. Abernathy, a well know citizen of this county, and he was the grandson of Judge Peter Rowland, deceased, for whom he was named. Peter was born on Sept. 27, 1879, and when he was ten months old it was discovered that he was seriously afflicted, which affliction followed him to his grave. We believe that through this affliction this dear boy was led to commit the keeping of his soul to God, who is a faithful Creator.
Peter died on May 30, 1901, and was buried at Macedonia Church, Chambers County, Ala., the following day, the burial services being conducted by the writer. He left abundant testimony that he had received pardon and peace from God, which will give him reception at His right hand in the great resurrection morning.
He died praising God and exhorting those who watched around his bedside to a faithful discharge of all their duties.
Oh, may these last words of a dying boy, fall like good seed into good soil. May those who heard them bring forth fruit to Holiness. Good neighbors and friends manifested their sympathy and care for the bereaved family.
Being kept at home much of his time and not being able to labor on account of his sickness, he was a constant reader and lover of the Bible and spent many hours in diligent search of that truth, which is able to make us wise unto salvation.
We feel assured he sleeps with Jesus.
