Graveside Services for Mary Celia Coates, 86, of Kilgore, formerly of Alvin, Texas will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Marlow Cemetery in Cameron, Texas with Brother Raymond Russell officiating. The family will receive friends at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Coates passed away Wednesday in Longview.
Mary was born July 4, 1924 in Cameron, Texas, daughter of the late William Elijah and Cardie Cardelia Ofelia Pothenia Hux Shafer. She and her late husband, Mr. Buford A. Coates, lived in Alvin for over 40 years; Marye had been a resident of Kilgore for the past four years. Mary was a Christian and in her younger years worked in the church nursery. Mrs. Coates was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend. She always was there to give someone a helping hand; her doors were always open if someone needed a little help.
She is survived by her children, Ruby Craine of Kilgore, Shirley Dehart of Kilgore, Donald Coates of Alvin, B.A. Coates, Jr. of Freeport, Jimmy Coates of Alvin and Beverly Dempsey; brother, Wesley Shafer of Cameron; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buford Arnold Coates; and daughter, Stella Thomas.
