Samuel was one of the Selectmen and had been such for several years, beginning with the first board in the District in 1754, and continued to hold office until he joined the Continental Army.

According to Granville lore, Samuel Bancroft was Granville's( Bedford at the time) first settler in 1735, with a grant of land about 100 acres.

Rev. Timothy Mather Cooley remembered Samuel Bancroft in 1845 as follows:
Samuel Bancroft, of Springfield, was the first settler; he built the first rude cabin here, and may be regarded as the patriarch of Granville. He was a facetious, kind hearted, industrious man, a little below mediocrity in stature. Some of us remember him well, when he appeared abroad, especially on the Sabbath, in his antique dress, with his triangular cocked hat, and the still more imposing appendage of a great bush wig, inspiring the reverence of beholders. He was one of the first board of Selectmen in Granville, and in 1775 was chosen Representative to the General Court in Watertown."

Samuel's house was located on the west side of the original road leading from Westfield to Granville. This area is now covered by the Granville Reservoir. In 1895 approval was granted to the Westfield Water Works to take the land in Granville by eminent domain for the construction of two reservoirs that would supply Westfield with water.
