Newman's parents were Coart Hutchings and Amy Skinner. He was born on September 10, 1853 in Bennington, Shiawassee County, Michigan, the couple's last of seven children.
1863 - Both of his parents died within four months of each other. Ten year old Newman and 13 year old brother Edward moved in with oldest brother Abram. Newman stayed on as a farmhand until he was 24.
1876 - Newman married his neighbor Mary A. Baese, who was born 1858 in Buffalo, New York. She was the daughter of Frederick and Mary S. Baese, German immigrants from Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
1878 - Newman, with brothers Nelson, Edward and Henry, made the decision to move their families to Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska. Newman and Nelson set up a furniture business in town.
1879 - Newman and Mary's daughter Lena Blanch was born.
1883 - Newman and Mary's daughter Eva Lucille was born.
1885 - Newman and Mary's daughter Pearl Anna was born.
1886 - Newman and Mary moved infant Pearl, and daughters Lena and Eva to Crawford, Nebraska.

1906 - Newman retired in poor health. During the few years he was painting, he suffered from chronic lead poisoning.

1908 - The Hutchings and the Baese families reunited one last time at the home of Mary's father, Fred Baese in Bennington, Michigan.
Shortly after returning home from their visit to Michigan, Newman and Mary relocated to West Seattle and its milder climate. Daughter Muriel, still a youngster, was sent to stay with her older sister.
